Sometimes it’s necessary to go a long distance out of the way in order to come back a short distance correctly. ~Edward Albee

This photo reminds me of Oklahoma when I was a little girl. My father’s family is from there and when we’d visit there would be such wonderful things to get into. There were pipes coming out the ground that didn’t go anywhere and things in the barn that I had no clue what they were used for.

Now, of course, I’d know too much about what things were; matter-of-fact-ness makes things less magical. I’d know that the pipes sticking out of the ground were probably for air so the pump would work or that the things in the barn all have some practical use, such as a single tree (yes there are double trees too, and not the hotel chain). We’d learn simple things like how a pulley works or what a pig trail is (where the dogs have made a path through the low-lying brush; an adult would have to crawl through it, but a kid could get through there easily) and how to pretend to be good when we had just done something we were told a thousand times not to do.

I still love the way clothes on a line look and feel. I love the way a saddle smells. I still like to do what I’ve been told a thousand times not to do.

Some things never change.
