Wherever human beings have been you see rectangles and straight lines because we are always trying to straighten things out. ~Alan Watts
On the surface, it seems as if we shouldn’t, in fact, create these lines to straighten out our world; the ebb and flow of life always finds its own way. A little deeper thought brings me to the conclusion that, sometimes, without creating order in chaos, we couldn’t find the creative.
I can hike through the middle of a forest and find the creative; inspiration flows from open meadows and blue skies. But when I walk in this city, I find, out of the chaos is more inspiration than can be contained. It doesn’t flow like a gentle breeze, it bombards you from all sides; a whirlwind of thoughts and inspirations.
By creating the rectangles and straight lines, we can find the imagination in the nooks, the crannies, the buildings, the people. At times, the patterns in our lives allow us to look past the accustomed and discover the best parts: the unusual; the creative; the self.
